Meditation is looking directly at who we are and not assuming anything- about our thoughts, our emotions, or our situation.
In this way, Buddhist practice is very similar to the scientific method- as soon as we make an assumption about something we can get stuck there.
We all know this in life- you assume somebody will love you forever and then they leave, and then you’re really stuck. We assume, assume, assume.
