In Buddhism, we take refuge in what is called the three jewels: Buddha, Dharma, & Sangha – i.e. we place our bet there rather than simply trying to achieve a comfortable life style.
Sometimes taking refuge in those can actually disrupt our comfortable life style, because we are cutting our ties to an ego-centric worldview.
When we take refuge, the Buddha, or awakened being, is at the center of our lifestyle.
